2016 Wines and the taste of the times
What happens when we taste a wine? My eyes, memories, education and my culture influence my perception. Taste is never neutral! The Wine Museum invites you to experience the many dimensions of taste through a creative visual exhibition. In addition, throughout the year, you can follow a series of events linked to this fascinating theme.
From the beginning we have sensation. Five senses register our impression of the world: hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch. Taste, notably the “sense” of flavours, is not limited to our gustatory sense: all of our senses work together to create it. The perception of flavours depends on tactile and heat taste buds (gustatory calyculi) on the tongue, but also the olfactory mucus membranes, our view and our hearing. Personal memories, embedded in their cultural and historic context, also play a role.
The exhibition, designed by Project Hidalgo, draws the visitor’s attention to the many elements called upon when we taste wine. If you would like to see the aromas that are evoked, listen to the tune of each Valais AOC grape variety or read the words used to describe wine – from the Middle Ages to today – or reflect on how wine is not a liquid but rather a bottle, producer, terroir, vintage, price and label – this exhibition is for you!
