Collection Fauth

Georges Fauth, cooper, collection – Sion. This collection was offered to the Wine Museum in 2015 by the city of Sion, which acquired it in 1987.

  • Planes
    Curved planes to dig out the inside and concave faces of the staves.
  • Rabot pour le rabotage des douve
    Planer to plane the staves. The cooper works each stave using different knives to correct imperfectionss.
  • Grand compas
    Large compass in wood, used to measure the diameter of the bottom of the barrel while it is being made.
  • Paroir ou herminette
    Skimmer or adze used to trim, an operation that consisted of scraping out a small une petite bit on the inside surface of the two ends of a barrel, where the bases would go.

Objects linked to the different ways of drinking, social and symbolic aspects.

  • Gobelet en bois
    Wooden goblet used by the Bourgeoisies in the Val d’Anniviers, Valais, 20th c.
  • Coupe d’accouchée
    Childbirth cup used for special wine offered to women who have just given birth. The childbirth wine, spicy, was served warm; it was most often Humagne Blanc. Valais, end of 19th c.
  • Carafe en verre
    Glass carafe for wine service. Verrerie de Monthey, Valais, 20th c.

Objects linked to the transformation of grapes to wine, from pressing to bottling.

Vines

Objects that are used to work the vines. Mainly handmade in Valais, work in the vineyards required tools specific to each task -  pruning, leaf work, sulphating and harvest.
